History of Hunting Rifles
Many of our everyday hunting rifles have impressive ancestry as combat rifles. Others were developed because the combat cartridges were illegal for civilians to own in their countries of origin at the time. The range of 7mm and 8mm cartridges from Europe include a number of civilian chamberings that originated as slight modifications (wildcats?) of the military originals. The drop downs to this page sourced by Tom and Keith will be the factual historic information of some well known originals based on their years of interest and research.
Keith will also enlighten us regarding his scratchings into the story behind the history - the actual decisions by armies and procurement officers and their logic (or opposite) that drove the decisions.
